3 Main Disadvantages with Tower Aquariums

tall tower aquariumsTower Aquariums while may look nice and project the modern living room concept; it actually presents a lot of challenges to the owners in terms of maintenance and up keeping. Generally in an aquarist’s point of view, having a deep tank is always seen as being less advantages or desirable compared to shallow ones, reason is because the wider tank top actually provides much higher water surface area for air water gas exchange. Most types of aquarium fish also prefer swallow tanks for easy maneuver from tank base to the top as they do no need to constantly contract and expand their air bladder in order to reach the water surface (sometime needed when oxygen level is low at the tank bottom).

Not a Perfect Home for Fish
Main disadvantage associated with having a tower aquarium is when it comes to hobbyist having those fancy fish variety as pets, for instance like the pearlscale goldfish including also jikin and bubble-eye. With the tank height easily reaching 5 feets with some measuring taller than that, the fish will find itself having difficulty controlling and maintaining their level at certain water depth. Remember on what we’ve learned in Science class lessons, the deeper the water depth goes, the higher the pressure it is at the bottom and unless the type of fish that you intend to keep is specifically those natural living in deep water, I would strongly caution against using a tower aquariums to keep any other general types of fish.

Aeration Problem
Since the tank reaches deep underneath, it also presents another challenge for you to improve the aquarium aeration system to ensure that the base also has enough oxygen for the fish. Basically in order to get oxygen rich water to reach the lower end, the water flow system must be able to move the oxygen rich water located on top of tank going down to the bottom. Sometimes if this is not done properly, you will end up instead having a dead spot in the area at the bottom, low in oxygen and because of this condition; it creates an anaerobic condition that leads to breakdown of fish waste that can result in buildup of harmful noxious gases. Needless for me to tell you also that, these will turn into a disaster if let’s say there’s a sudden and unexpected electrical power supply failure or the equipment such as air pumps suddenly breaks down.

Complicates Aquarium Maintenance Process
Routine aquarium cleaning also becomes another problem which you have to deal with if have tower aquariums. With depth almost close to the human height, generally you will never be able to reach down to the bottom using just your hand and as such you will need a long extended pole brush for you to reach the bottom. The price of tower aquarium will also cost more, generally few hundreds dollar higher compared to standard custom tank design or even corner aquariums. Main reason is because the glass has to be made thicker so that it can withstand the water pressure exerted especially on the lower half of the tank.

How to Design and Construct Fish Tank Overflow System

Having an aquarium equipped with an overflow system is required for a number of reasons. If for instance, you need to top up water and maintain the aquarium at the same level at all times then it would be a good idea to have an overflow system that can channel the water to some other place without wetting the surrounding areas. Good idea especially if you place the fish tank in a living room with a carpet. One of the most direct approaches one would think is that by drilling a hole on the tank top level and attaching a pipe would solve all the problems but there other ways which would work the same as well.

The design of an aquarium overflow system can be simplified and accomplished without doing any modification that requires drilling that can cause your fish tank to be void of warranty. Seems to make sense because you wouldn’t want your thousand dollars 100 gallon acrylic or all-glass newly purchased fish home to have holes drilled in it. The system can actually constructed and achieved using the principle of atmospheric pressure water balancing and overall all these only requires some piping installation to be implemented.

Let’s look at the diagram below for the whole working principle before we move on further to explain on how the overflow system works. Based on discussion that we had earlier and then explained in details, what you can see from here is that (on the left diagram) there are two fish tanks which are basically connected by an inverted U pipe. If let’s say the piping is filled with water, according to atmospheric law of water balancing under the same pressure, both tanks should end up having the same water level.

For instance, if let’s say you decided to select and fill either one of the tanks with some water, theoretically, the liquid should flow to the other side as well until both aquariums are having the same water level. Now let’s consider this scenario, in order to design and construct the aquarium overflow system, what you basically need right now is to remove the other end of the inverted U pipe and then visualize that instead of a tank there, you now change it to a pipe connection that diverts water to other location (as illustrated in the picture on your right).

example of aquarium overflow systemSounds easy? Well, it's fairly straightforward and if you manage to construct the exact duplicate projected above, you don’t ever have to ever worry about your aquarium overflowing anymore. However, one thing you will need to take note over here is that if you notice and study the diagram carefully, you will notice there’s an exposed pipe to the atmosphere which basically is needed to make sure that there is a balanced pressure between one end and another so that water can flows through. Another advantage of having an overflow system is when you have a trickle filter or sump filtration system set up for your saltwater aquarium that pumps the water around.

Community Tank Ideas and Suggestions (finding perfect tank mates)

The trickiest part towards setting up a thriving community aquarium is finding the perfect tank mates that would get along with each other. Certain species can be pretty hostile but there are others which are docile, friendly type of fish that would tolerate each others unique behavior without harming or causing havoc to the community setup.

There are different ideas coming from individual hobbyist with certain arguments about the best setup one should have. But for me, as long as you observe to ensure that your fish does not end up fighting and the tank setup is large enough to accommodate every species, then things should be fine.

Before we start, first thing first that I would like to stress and remind a newbie to take note is that, never ever get deceived by the appearance or size. For example, fish like the tiger barb although do not grow up to very large, but however they are actually very good with their fin-nipping antique. And so, without further ado, let’s look at some suggestions which I have in mind which has proven well working for me over the years.

idea for perfect fish tankSuggestions for community aquarium
From the list below, you will find that I have taken into consideration to combine the large and small species together, community fish that fills every depth of the aquarium from bottom, middle to the top and finally different color mix.

6 Neon Fish (also known as neon tetra)
2 Dwarf Gourami
1 Clown Loach
3 Platy (1 male, 2 females)
3 Zebra Danios
1 Peaceful Betta (Betta imbellis)
1 Kribensis Cichlids (Rainbow Crib) – Close observation needed. Remove immediately if it shows signs of aggression.

Alternatively you can also use 2nd combination which I would suggest trying out as well.

6 Pencilfish
3 Albino Corydoras Catfish
3 Male Guppies
2 Freshwater Clams
4 Hatchet Fish (can be silver or marbled type)
1 Pearl Gourami - make sure your tank is at least 80 gallons and above as the fish can grow up to very large size. I would suggest you add this fish as the final addition with close observations whether they can adapt well without harming others

Koi Pond Water Quality (Increase TDO level)

koi pond oxydator unitManagement of water quality is perhaps the hardest and most challenging aspect of maintaining a koi pond. Due to large pond size and higher TDO (total dissolved oxygen) requirement by the koi fish, there are several things you need to look into and control so that this will minimize breakout of disease and achieving oxygen rich, crystal clear water so that your pet remains healthy.

One of the hardest aspects when it comes to improving water quality is how to work towards increasing TDO in the water because the ideal level for your fish to remain active should have the oxygen concentration as high as possible. The idea of increasing TDO level lies mainly on the reason whereby with sufficient oxygen amount present in the water, this actually encourages the microorganism living in the water to convert waste aerobically rather than the opposite called anaerobically (happens only when oxygen level is insufficient). In lay man’s term, this means that the decaying matter coming from the waste can be converted into less harmful components that will not poison or harm your fish. In the past, few of the different conventional methods, hobbyist often look into to deal with this problem is by focusing on improving the pond aeration systems.

New technologies involving the use of Oxydator is now the latest trend to deal with low TDO level. Basically the whole concept lies around on how the system actually utilizes and controls the chemical breakdown of hydrogen peroxide into free oxygen which all take place in a container and when the oxygen is produced, it will then be released into the pond water making it available for your fish. Though there are some extra cost involved in maintaining the system, overall you will notice a marked difference between the koi living in a pond equipped with an oxydator compared with one that doesn’t have the system. Your pet will be less susceptible to contacting disease, having better chance of survival and are more active displaying vibrant colors.

Apart from that, the water clarify in a koi pond having an oxydator is also much clearer and the thing is that once the system has been installed you will notice the water turns crystal clear within a matter of few hours.

About Me

My Photo

My fascination and interest towards aquarium fish has led me to devote my time towards caring and learning about this wonderful pet.

Aquarium fish keeping is a very challenging and exciting hobby. When I first started, I never knew much or have the necessary guidance back then because none of my family members were actually a keen hobbyist. And because of that, I’ve encountered numerous failures and the worst part is having to deal with dead fish every time when you started to grow fond and getting attached to my pets. However, I persevered and took steps to find out and search for information from other hobbyist, apart from the knowledge gained and learned from my own experience and research. The blog that I’ve created here is meant to share useful information and tips about aquarium fish keeping so that new hobbyist will not make the same mistakes that I’ve made in the past."
