Marine Butterfly Fish Information

One of the most popular and interesting saltwater fish that is often considered as an addition to the marine tank setup is the Butterfly Fish. There are actually different species that belong to the same group with some that can easily adjust well to home aquarium water environment and also adapting to changes without showing sign of developing complication, while there are some species that will die even when the best living condition is provided. With that in mind, there are only few selections of butterfly fish suitable to be kept in captive aquarium system.

According to journals and marine resources, there are actually almost 120 butterfly species that have been categorized and identified thus far. Out of those, there is only a handful which can be described as “hardy” for home aquariums while the rest are generally unsuitable to be taken in as pets. All Butterflyfishes are grouped together to form the family Chaetodontidae and each of them share few similarities such as having a flat body with a square shape appearance and their mouth is rather small extending a certain length like a snout. Different species are found in different regions of the sea and the adult fish in the wild is usually about 10 to 12 inches in size.

Some of the most common and so-called hardy butterfly fish that I would recommend to advanced marine aquarist generally comprises of longnose, copperband, teardrop, pyramid, raccoon and threadfin fish. Usually the best aquarium setup to house your pets should have a system well-equipped with protein skimmer and coral sands, which acts to control the pH within 8.2 to 8.5 while the temperature should stick to the 78 to 85 degree Fahrenheit range. Apart from that, a powerful filter system should also be present because without these, you will have a hard time maintaining perfect water quality.

Mixing your butterfly fish into a saltwater community tank should be done with extreme care. A good rule of thumb would be to avoid basses, lionfish and triggers while tang and angelfish might be fine provided that your reef system is large enough for each fish to thrive well without disturbing one another. When it comes to breeding your butterfly fish, little information is known about how the whole process works out and it’s very rare to hear success stories of marine pet hobbyist who has successful get the fish to spawn in captivity.

About Jaguar Fish (freshwater cichlids)

jaguar fishAs what the name implies, the Jaguar Fish is one of the most notorious highly temperamental types of cichlids that often attack other community tank mates. Because of its territorial behavior, it is often kept confide within its own species and unless if you have a very large tank, you could use a “trial and observe” approach to check out whether the new tank mates will be able to fend for itself living with the fish. Most pet jaguar fish hobbyist will often mix it together with other fish species such as Oscar since both are cichlids that are native to the South American river, but however, they will often end up in a fight whereby one will get injured and died.

Jaguar cichlids is a natural predator in the wild and because of this trait, even when the fish are mostly bred and raise in a tank confinement, they will still require high protein meaty food to survive. Usually chucks of discarded chicken meat are a top choice among jaguar fish breeders and it is also common to see people using krill and bloodworms as alternative food source. Some hobbyist will even try to train and confine the diet solely to fish pellets, but however, this doesn’t produce good results for your pet as the jaguar fish will often reject the food offering and even if it does eat, the diet will not offer any benefit towards proper growth. Jaguar cichlids fed solely using fish pellets will often become stunted and the coloration will not be as bright as those offered daily supply of meaty foods.

About Proper Care & Growth Rate
When properly cared for, your jaguar pet can grow extremely fast. There are reports saying that one inch of additional length per month is possible and somehow, I’m not surprised if it can achieve beyond the mentioned growth rate. A normal adult jaguar fish is usually 15 inches in size and with body thickness reaching almost 2 inches; it is indeed a hefty pet to take care of. The species is also a very intelligent pet fish, and if you raise the fish from a young stock, it can grow to identify the owner who feeds and take care of them. I would suggest if you are keen on adopting this fish, to first prepare a huge tank (at least 120 gallons and above) and then conduct further research to find out which tank mates it can live with. So far, my choice of different cichlids fish such as oscar did not work out well but Apistogramma (dwarf cichlids), Blue Acara, Firemouth and Jack Dempsey might be fine. It still goes back to the “test the water” approach.

Aquarium Setup for African Lemon Yellow Cichlids

lemon yellow african cichlidsThe Lemon Yellow African Cichlids is a favorite among fish hobbyist, made popular for its striking yellow color appearance, not only on its whole body but the fins as well. Unlike normal Lake Tanganyika cichlids which are usually of larger size, the lemon yellow is much smaller measuring just less than 10cms in length for the full grown adult fish. Just like its African cichlids cousins, the fish is somehow quite aggressive and should not be mixed into the community tank.

Aquarium setup to house your lemon cichlids should have a network of caves which you can create yourself using a self made mold and later constructed using cement. To make things look natural you can consider decorating with lots of live plants especially Java Fern for them to hide in. Usually what I can see is that in order to save cost, certain hobbyist prefer to use half cut 4” PVC pipes so that it plays the same role as well. The tank base can be filled with small gravels and rounded pebbles and I would suggest in order to complete this setup, you can use an undergravel aquarium system so that it plays a dual role, not only to make things look nicer but it can help to filter your aquarium water as well.

The water condition in which your lemon yellow cichlids live in should be slightly alkaline within the pH range of 7.5 to 8.5. Measurement for water hardness should be above 10.0 dGH meaning that the water should be extremely hard in nature. To achieve this, what you can do is by adding mineral salt which is readily sold in aquarium stores. There are different types of salt but be careful not to mix up because what you need is actually the type of salt mixture that mimics the mineral composition present in the natural Lake Tanganyika and not the one made specifically for marine aquarium. For better accuracy and to know how much to add, basically you will need a digital hardness meter reader as well so that you can get the precise reading that you require and in the event the hardness level drops, you can quickly adjust back to the desired hardness level.

Water temperature to keep your lemon yellow cichlids should be best kept within 25 to 28 degree Celsius. Sometimes during water change, temperature might fluctuate and vary considerably and therefore it might be advisable to invest in a reliable aquarium water heater so that things can be kept under control. If for any reason that you fish becomes sick (symptoms seen on a sick fish), you should immediately check whether a drop in terms of water temperature might be the cause of the problem and you should immediately act to raise it back to the normal level. Special Bubble Eye Goldfish Care

bubble eye goldfishBubble Eye Goldfish is one of the most fragile and hard to care for variety of goldfish that also fits into the exotic group along with oranda, ranchu, pearlscale, ryukin and tosakin. This unique but yet entertaining type of coldwater fish species actually look odds and clumsy in the aquarium and unlike common pet fish they lack a dorsal fin as well. With their blurred vision and somehow poor sense of navigation, these fish were often found stuck attached at the filter inlet causing its eye sac bubble to puncture and getting injured.

Bubble eye goldfish comes in different colors ranging from white, orange, red, calico and even black due to heavy cross-breeding. They should not be confused with another fancy goldfish variety known as the celestial which has a pair of eyes turning upwards. Young bubble eye fish usually looks pretty normal without the sac and as it grows older the bubble eye appearance will start to form and develop by the time it is about 1 year old. At first, it will look something like accumulation of fluids but as it goes on, the sac actually gets bigger and becomes more transparent.

This special type of goldfish should be kept in an aquarium large enough, and those without strong current generated by undergravel filter system or power filters. They are best housed in a tank whereby the water is calm, preferably without sharp object or any aquarium decoration that might cause injury to their eyes. Due to their delicate requirement your bubble eye goldfish should not be mixed with any other fish species, except their own kind because they will have hard time competing for foods and their eye sac will often become the target of nipping behavior exhibited by certain species especially tiger barb, swordtails and guppy.

If for any reason the eye sac becomes injured or punctured due to accidents, usually a treatment of Melafix will help but try to avoid adding any other chemicals or even salt which I believe can make things become even worse. The best solution to deal with this problem is actually to leave the eye sac to grow and heal by itself, and during this period try to ensure that the water is clean and crystal clear so that there won’t be any chance for infection to take place that will further aggravate the injury. Depending on how serious the wound is, somehow it will take anywhere between 2 weeks or so before it gets better.

Bubble eyes goldfish nowadays are rarely sold in aquarium pet stores. Somehow due to their extreme and delicate needs, fish suppliers seem to avoid buying them and offer the fish for sale. Main reason is because if they are placed in a general tank, the owner will often overlook on certain matter and this usually results with the fish having high mortality rate and it is very normal to see them die when being neglected. Buying online is even more difficult because sellers usually will have a hard time to ensure that they will survive the trip and thus your best bet should be, if you ever come across fish farms, I would suggest you just grab the goldfish as your prized specimen.

About Me

My Photo

My fascination and interest towards aquarium fish has led me to devote my time towards caring and learning about this wonderful pet.

Aquarium fish keeping is a very challenging and exciting hobby. When I first started, I never knew much or have the necessary guidance back then because none of my family members were actually a keen hobbyist. And because of that, I’ve encountered numerous failures and the worst part is having to deal with dead fish every time when you started to grow fond and getting attached to my pets. However, I persevered and took steps to find out and search for information from other hobbyist, apart from the knowledge gained and learned from my own experience and research. The blog that I’ve created here is meant to share useful information and tips about aquarium fish keeping so that new hobbyist will not make the same mistakes that I’ve made in the past."
