Pet Severum Cichlids Fish

rare yellow severum cichlidsSeverum looks almost similar like the other blood parrot cichlids except that the front forehead is much rounder and overall body shape appears to be flatter. It is widely kept as a pet fish in home aquariums and it is normally housed in a tank whereby it is the only single species present. The name severum although implies that it might be a friendly peaceful looking fish companion, however, its general behavior seems to suggest otherwise.

In today’s aquarium trade, severum can be found in different colors due to heavy crossbreeding with other cichlids although the exact parentage has yet to be confirmed and traced. Wild caught severum fish that originates from the Amazon River is often blackish in color and it has several vertical gray bands that cut across its body. Normally they can be found as orange, gold, green or even pink colored fish while I have also come across the yellow variant albeit it is very much rare. Some hobbyist even claim that there is the albino type but personally, I’ve never come across one of those.

Care for your pet severum can be rated as fairly easy to moderately challenging because the fish can easily adapt to new tank water changes. In order to ensure that they stay healthy, it is best that the water hardness should be maintained in the range of 4 to 6 dGH which is fairly soft water condition. In terms of temperature requirement, the water must be within the limit of 25 to 28 deg Celsius similar to the tropical climate condition from where they belong. For the pH, it is best to control at the neutral pH region and avoids sudden fluctuation especially when conducting water changes.

The tank size setup to raise your severum fish should be as large as possible, with the minimum capacity measuring at least 50 gallons. It is better to control and limit the number of fish and a good rule of thumb is to allocate 20 gallons of water for every severum you intend to keep. The reason for this is because the fish can turn aggressive towards each other during the breeding season and if you have an established community of aquarium plants, your pets will dig everything up and make a whole mess of it. Once a severum pair is formed (which unfortunately to say, is a very complicated process), they can release and raise a number of broods which totals about few hundreds to few thousands young severums.

Information About Climbing Perch Fish

climbing perch gouramiClimbing perch is known for its unique ability to actually survive out of water and then navigate and travel within a certain walking distance to another puddle of water. The fish is also sometimes called climbing gourami and although it doesn’t really have the ability to climb up trees as one might have thought, to certain extent the fish can actually travel very far, gliding itself using the thrust by swinging its tail to move few meters during night time in search of better living condition.

Certain people have come to call it the walking fish and this usually happens when the current spot which they occupy or live in becomes overcrowded and when food source is scarce. Therefore, surviving this harsh and demanding condition has made this fish being categorized being one of the hardiest fish species that ever live. (Refer to definition of hardy fish suitable for kids)

Just like Tilapia, climbing perch is also a delicacy served as food fish among the Asian community. Not only that, they are also being kept as pets and domesticated to live in home aquariums. Climbing perch are a favorite among young children living in small villages located in outskirt cities in South East Asia as they are easily available and can be caught in paddy field’s puddle of water, mud holes or even drains as long as the water is not heavily polluted. The fish are widely called “ikan puyu” or “betok” among the Malay community.

There are several variants of the fish species and that depends on the locality on where they are found. Some has darker color tone while others appear in soft yellowish color. There are also the stripped and spotted climbing perch which can be quite rare while most commonly found variant of the fish is usually without any pattern on its body. Overall, the species doesn’t grow up to a very large size with an adult fish normally reaching roughly 5 to 10 cm in length. If I were to describe the fish, I would say it has an elongated body shape with a slightly big head and the body especially the gills are covered with hard scales. One word of advice would be, if you are handling the fish, I would suggest you wear some protective glove or else the scales can easily injure or cut your palm.

The aquarium setup for pet can be either plain with barren bottom but I would suggest adding some rocks or even pipes for them to hide in (learn about how to decorate your fish tank). If you are not sure about which aquarium plants to add, I would suggest putting in the hard leaves type such as Echinodorus cordifolius which can withstand onslaught nibbling by your pet fish. Occasionally you will often see the fish taking in a gulp of air and basically what they are doing is that they are actually breathing the normal air just like what we do. This special ability is what defines the category of labyrinth fish.

When it comes to food, the climbing perch will accept anything that you feed to them including kitchen waste like potato peel but be careful not to accidentally mix in oil to the water. The fish hardly develops any complication and a set of mine which were given to me by a friend actually survived for more than 2 years before I decide to give them up for adoption to another friend. When it comes to mixing into community aquarium, I would suggest you take precautionary steps not to put them in together with other smaller sized fish as those will ended up as food for your climbing perch. It is better to setup a single species tank as sometimes they can get pretty aggressive and attack each other especially during night time when the lights are out.

Environmental Considerations when Setting up Saltwater Aquariums

saltwater hippo tangAlmost every fish and corals seen in a saltwater fish tank displayed in aquarium shops are collected among wild reefs with some species caught in deep sea oceans while many were actually harvested especially from the Great Barrier Reefs in Australia. No matter how careful the reef harvester with every consideration put into account to ensure minimal loss and small impact to the environment, there are bound to be damages caused during the harvesting process. As such when setting up your saltwater fish tanks, careful planning has to be done to ensure that those precious resource collected from the sea is highly treasured and preserved so that all the efforts are not just wasted.

As a marine hobbyist, I realize how important it is to strike a balance between fulfilling your heart’s desire to maintain a perfect working saltwater aquarium and at the same time do as little as possible with regards to causing damage to the environment just for our needs. Therefore, if possible, check and confirm with the aquarium shop owner on where the live rocks and reefs are collected and if possible get your supply only from saltwater farms that actually grow and cultivate the fish meant solely just for sales. Usually if I do not get the satisfactory answers that I’ve hoped for, then I’ll just leave the store in search of another.

The Environmental Impact
There are few notes to remember which I want to highlight here when I say there is an environmental damage. First of all, removal of live rocks and reef structure actually means taking away the hiding place meant for thousands of live microorganisms and fish species. Certain fish types such as the clownfish depend on the anemones living among the corals for survival and removing these means taking away the precious live sustaining mechanism that protects all of them together. Another note which I would like to stress here is that depending on the skill and attitude of the harvester, most of these live rocks will eventually managed to reach aquarium stores but little were known as to how many of those that have actually gone wasted due to carelessness or ignorance.

Use of poison especially to stun and then collect the wild fish for aquarium trades also pose another problem that has a huge impact towards the environment. This is one of the most irresponsible acts because most of these fish although managed to survive to end up in saltwater fish tanks, many were known to later develop complications and succumb to effects of the poison. Apart from the point raised above, use of stunning agent can also cause damages to other microorganisms that inhabit the wild reefs and the long term effect can be devastating. My view is that if you ever come across such people going about doing this unscrupulous act, not only should you avoid buying the fish from them but you should also take the effort to report them to local authorities for further actions.

About Me

My Photo

My fascination and interest towards aquarium fish has led me to devote my time towards caring and learning about this wonderful pet.

Aquarium fish keeping is a very challenging and exciting hobby. When I first started, I never knew much or have the necessary guidance back then because none of my family members were actually a keen hobbyist. And because of that, I’ve encountered numerous failures and the worst part is having to deal with dead fish every time when you started to grow fond and getting attached to my pets. However, I persevered and took steps to find out and search for information from other hobbyist, apart from the knowledge gained and learned from my own experience and research. The blog that I’ve created here is meant to share useful information and tips about aquarium fish keeping so that new hobbyist will not make the same mistakes that I’ve made in the past."
