List of 5 Most Beautiful Fish in the World

beautiful pearlscale fishPearlscale goldfish although is a funny-looking clumsy fish that often swims in an erratic manner due to its rounded body shape, coincidentally it is also one of the most beautiful fish species due to its striking coloration. The fish is famous in the aquarium trade not only for its charm and beauty but also for its ever increasing high demand expected from its owner to maintain the perfect water condition for it to live in. Loved by both kids and adults alike, the fish never fails to amaze anybody looking for the perfect pets.

colorful kribensis fishKribensis or better known as rainbow crib is an aquarium fish famous for its mix of different coloration that resembles a rainbow. It belongs to the cichlids fish family and unlike most of its cousin; kribensis is generally categorized as a peaceful loving fish that fits into any aquatic community. The fish is also easy to care and it is often recommended to any fish beginners to the freshwater aquarium hobby. Its striking coloration shown especially during the mating season will have anyone full of admiration. It mainly appears in white, orange or solid red color blend which combines together to create the perfect color combination. Modern day ranchus are also cross-bred to produce a calico type which contains speckles of black spots as well which obviously looks stunning. However, it is actually not the color itself that attracts the attention of hobbyist but in fact, what makes people admire and become a fan of ranchu is the innocent looking baby face appearance that is considered cute by many. Just like pearlscale, ranchu is also a variety of the goldfish family which is created by selective breeding done in Japan. (More about Japanese Ranchu and other cute fish)

Achilles TangTang is a rare aquarium saltwater tropical species highly sought after by fish enthusiast. Tang is made up of a wide range of diverse groups of individual fish species that is unique and special for its blend of attractive coloration. Among the most beautiful fish in this Acanthurus genus that is worth mentioning here is the Blue Hippo tang and the Achilles tang which are active colorful swimmers which will keep you busy all day as you observe and watch their movements. However, one of the downside that prevents you from keeping the fish is the difficulty level of care that it needs and Tang is definitely not the type of fish recommended for beginners.

beautiful multi-colored mandarinfishMandarinfish is among the most brightly colored saltwater fish species, cherished and admired by every fish hobbyist. The color profile is basically made up of combination of blue, green and yellow marking that forms a balanced color stripe creating a beautifully defined pattern. Unfortunately attempts to keep the fish in a home aquarium tank often results in failure because it is almost impossible trying to get the fish to acclimatize to artificial fish tank environment. Even the choice of food for your mandarinfish often becomes a major issue as the fish can be highly selective and extremely picky on what to eat.

Coldwater & Tropical Fish Encyclopedia

Fish Encyclopedia on Basic Anatomy
Fish has a streamlined body shape that enables it to swim across waters moving from one place to another. Basically the shape has to be long and sharp enough to enable it to overcome resistance of the water so that they will have higher chances of survival. Tropical wild fish found in rivers, streams and lakes all have the basic shape that enables them survive in the wild and escape predatory creature with the exception of certain fish species kept in home aquarium which has a rounder appearance just like the goldfish which is a coldwater species.

The reason why the body shape of home aquarium species is highly different compared to those in the wild is because of selective breeding to mate the choice of fish with certain attributes to produce offspring with desired characteristic. Because of these, fish that were rounder and created specially for home aesthetic appearance usually lacks the survival ability of a native tropical fish in the wild. In fact, I should mention here also that besides the long and torpedo shape of a common fish, there is also another fish variety call the discus (an Amazon River native) which looks flat and round and it is also an extremely fast swimming species that cuts through water with ease.

Skin and Scales
Body of every tropical fish is covered with scales, which acts like a protective armor. It can be easily lost caused by rough handling but that would not pose any problem to the fish because in time, it will regenerate back. On top of the scales, there is also a layer of mucus which offers another level of protection which is why you can feel the sense of sliminess when handling your tropical fish. The function of this layer is mainly to further protect the fish especially to avoid infection. That is why when you have an injured fish; the exposed skin area will become susceptible to a wide range of diseases. The colorful appearance seen on every tropical and coldwater fish is contributed by the pigmentation of the skin cells lying underneath the scales and how dense the buildup of pigment will actually determine the coloration of your pet.

Basic Fish AnatomyFins
Fins are very important to the fish because it helps them to maneuver and determine the course of direction it wants to head to. Basically every fish type is made up of dorsal fin, caudal fin (known also as tail fin), anal fin, pectoral fin and finally pelvic fin. Let’s look at the picture above that describes the location of each and every individual fin and then discussing in more details. Basically the fins has its own function whereby the dorsal and anal fin will provide stability for the fish to sustain its position in the water, caudle fin to provide thrust to push the fish forward while the pectoral and pelvic to will determine whether the fish swims right or left. Different tropical fish species has different size and appearance of the fins, some like the male guppy has a very huge tail fin while for the goldfish, certain variety like the ranchu does not even have a dorsal fin at all.

Eyesight, Hearing and Sensing
Different fish species has different eyesight capability. While most tropical fish has extremely good vision, some selectively bred coldwater goldfish has poor eyesight due to distorted eye position as seen with celestial goldfish. When it comes to hearing and sensing, almost all species can respond well to sound and vibration in the water. The ability is contributed by internal ears embedded in the head and the lateral line present on every fish allows it to detect vibration caused by movement in the water. In the wild, surviving native species has even more sensitive sensory organs to detect pressure waves in the water helping the fish to navigate across murky waters and avoiding obstacles.

Pet Turtle in Fish Tank

turtle fish tankKeeping Pet Turtle in a Fish Tank is actually possible but only if a few conditions are met. First of all, turtle can grow up to a very large size and it’s quite common to see one reaching at least one foot in length. With that in mind, the whole tank setup to keep the fish and your turtle should at least be able to hold about 80 gallons of water with the length of the tank measuring at least 5 feet. This means that your ideal choice of a tank setup should be one that is long but it does not necessarily means it must be deep. Therefore do not be tricked into thinking that the small palm-sized turtle which you see sold in pet shops are those that will hold the same size in another year to come because the turtle can grow very fast.

Next, what kind of fish you decide to keep is another important criteria to consider. Turtles are sometimes notorious of eating just about anything that fits into their mouth. Other than healthy fish pellets, waste vegetable, or even crickets, part of their diet also includes fish. If you intend to ensure that your pet fish will get along well with your turtle, you should be careful in your selection to choose a compatible companion. Small sized fish like platy, guppy and neon tetra are definitely out of question and so does goldfish because they generate too much waste to the water and together with the turtle, heavily pollutes the water beyond control. My choice of a perfect fish and turtle combination would be selection of giant gourami, certain types of catfish and those cichlids which are not overly aggressive like the kribensis. Also to avoid are oscar fish because instead of your turtle eating the fish, they will end up getting injured from the provocative bite of your oscar.

Apart from what has been mentioned earlier, a turtle fish tank should also have a complete filtration system that can handle huge amount of waste generation. My recommendation is to get an external power filter and since you have a fairly huge size of fish, there won’t be much of a problem after all. If this requirement is not fulfilled, soon enough you will find that they water will turn murky and smelly due to heavy waste discharge. If possible, part of the tank accessories should also include an aeration system generated by air pump so that your turtle can enjoy an oxygen rich environment.

Turtles are also known to be a type of reptile that requires dry land for resting and shelter. Therefore your fish tank that you intend to keep your turtle should have a portion filled with sand or having a huge pile of large rocks that is higher than the water level. This way, your turtle will have a place to rest on especially when it gets tired of swimming. Either way, you could also consider getting the type of turtle ramp which is actually a plain plastic board that has a suction cup so that it can attach to the aquarium wall surface. Most people do not realize of this requirement and it’s a big mistake to let their young turtle swimming continuously with their fish, only to find a dead turtle after a few weeks with the death caused by exhaustion. I hope the information here will serve as a good guide for those wannabe who intend to setup a turtle living in a fish tank.

MY Nice Lovable Cute Fish

After writing countless articles touching on various fish topics, I’ve decided to be a little different in my blog post this time round which I will concentrate mainly talking about my fish keeping experience. Perhaps, what I would like to share over here is the answer to the same question that were always forwarded to me by my relatives, friends and even colleagues on why I chose aquarium fish hobby as my favorite past time. Well, the main reason on what got me attracted to the aqua hobby until today is the cute and lovable appearance of seeing my first pet fish which is a pearlscale. While most girls at my age fancy dogs and cats as their best friend, my idea of a perfect companion was one that would not run away and something that swims in the water. It is this idea that holds true for me until today.

lovable cute fish
As I got myself longer in the aquarium fish hobby, knowing and discovering even more different types of fish, soon I got to know that the pearlscale goldfish was not the only one that fits perfectly into the cute fish group. Clownfish which is a saltwater species is also equally attractive but keeping them comes with more challenges as they are harder to keep alive and maintain. The fish generally is a very gentle and friendly type of pets and they are very sensitive to changes in the aquarium environment and their needs are very delicate. Nevertheless having my first own saltwater tank with my clownfish was indeed an experience that I will never forget and the thoughts of going through the countless hours of routine water changes and testing, never got me tired after all.

Another type of fish that I consider as cute fish is the kissing gourami. Initially when I stumbled upon the species, I was baffled as to what they were doing in the first place. The idea of hearing the word kissing quickly led me to the thought that the fish were engaging in some kind of breeding activity, but however, it turns out that I was wrong! It was actually a challenge or duel among the male species to find out which one is the strongest. Somehow watching the fish locking lips was indeed entertaining and I really enjoyed my time watching their activity. Finally if you are a new fish hobbyist who just stumbled across my blog post here looking for the best overall cute fish, then my suggestion would be these 3, which are pearlscale, clownfish and kissing gourami.

Keeping Freshwater Clams in Aquarium

golden freshwater clamFreshwater clams can be found in rivers and natural lakes with gentle-flow moving waters rich in sediments and nutrients. Usually they can be found burrowed under shallow bed of sands and they are generally peaceful loving creature which would not harm and provoked other lake dwellers. Because of its friendly nature, clams have attracted the attention of freshwater hobbyist and these days they are even collected and added to an aquarium establishment in order to live and thrive together with other fish species.

Clams make wonderful addition to any fish tank and unlike other pets; they do not require special attention to fulfill their needs. They are often added to be part of an aquarium community because clams are known to act as natural filter to remove particles and leftover food debris which often get trapped among the sand and gravel bed. An aquarium designed to keep both fish and the clams should have mixture of substrates which should not be too coarse or too fine with the grain size measuring somewhere between 1 to 3mm. I would suggest you properly rinse and clean before adding the substrate to prevent unwanted accumulation of waste that might harbor viral diseases.

Coming to maintenance, I rarely have any problem having to deal with their needs. In fact these clams almost took care of themselves without even requiring my attention or supervision. Certain aquarists leave them alone without feeding any special food so that they will sift through the leftover waste and picking them up. For mine, sometimes, I will head over to the pet fish stores and try to buy for them some sinking algae wafers which they simply love to eat. One note of caution however is that, make sure that there are no dead clams being left in the tank, or else it will immediately foul the water and raise ammonia level hazardous to your aquatic community.

Freshwater aquarium clams are compatible with all tropical species and coldwater fish as they will adjust to suit the natural condition. However, what I found out is that they prefer slightly lower water temperature usually in the region of 20 to 22 degree Celsius meaning that coldwater companions will be more suitable getting along with them. There are certain fish species however which I would avoid keeping them together with my pet clams such as freshwater puffer, loaches and certain catfish species because they will end up making a good meal out of them.

Thanks Mark, appreciate it!

Choice of Friendly Fish Companion

Aquarium pets are indeed wonderful addition to any family. My choice and idea of having a friendly fish are those pets which can recognize and greet their owner when being approach. There are quite a number of fish species that share and exhibit these characteristics notably goldfish, koi, kissing gourami, arowana. Other than what is mentioned, an ideal and perfect friendly fish friend should be one that is ease to care for without having fussy requirements.

Goldfish
pet goldfishGoldfish has been a popular aquarium pet since ages ago and they are treasured not only for their beautiful and colorful appearance but also for their friendly nature which adores every pet owner. The fish when they are newly introduced to the aquarium might be a little bit shy and will easily get startled but once they get accustomed to their new home, they will become active and exhibit enthusiastic nature when being approached by the owner. They absolutely get excited during feeding time and goldfish will swim around from one corner to the other knowing that it’s time for a good meal.

Koi
koi fishKoi is perhaps another fish breed that you should consider as one of your best companion. Although they are generally kept as fish pond so that they can be viewed from above overlooking their magnificent display of perfect color patch, koi are still a suitable choice if you are looking for a friendly pet. Young koi maybe less active but those which survives long enough (and believe me some live as long as 10 to 20 years) they tend to develop the tendency to swim as close as possible nearer to their owner hoping to be touched and get the attention that they want. Without fear of being caught just like some other fish species, koi will even swim around the hand of the pet owner dip into the pond and will readily accept their pat and touch. It’s sometimes a bond that will take time to develop and having such a friendly fish is indeed a treasure that is hard to find.

Kissing gourami
pink kissing gourami lock lipsKissing gourami is another type of fish that you should consider if you are looking for the right friendly fish to serve as your companion. Although they are not as friendly and responsive compared to koi and goldfish, their rare antique and somehow funny display of character can sometimes make you laugh. When put together in a group, kissing gourami are known to engage in a kissing ritual that will get you amazed. It is some kind of a lip lock intended as a show of strength among the male fish. When it comes to developing owners and pet bond, they will also approach enthusiastically and they simply fond having someone watching over them and they love to grab the food from the palm of their owner during feeding hours.

The list of fish given above is just a few of them based on my recommendation but there are even more species depending on preferences from individual fish enthusiast. Nevertheless having the right friendly family fish is indeed something that you will never get bored with and ask any pet owner and they will tell you that they don’t mind spending countless hours watching their fish and cleaning the tank as long as they feel that what they have done is worth giving the best for their lifelong companion. For those who missed out arowana, you can also find out more details about this fish in the exotic tropical species section.

Keeping Freshwater Zebra Danio in Aquariums

Zebra Danio (Brachydanio rerio) is a type of freshwater fish which originated from the rivers located in the northeastern Indian states in Asia. The species is grouped under the Cyprinidae fish family and zebra danio can be easily recognized based on its slim and thin body appearance marked by presence of 4 horizontal lines that runs along its body starting from the gill and ending at the tail fin. The golden stripes appear against a blue color body background in which both color combination blend well and makes the fish look stunning and impressive.

male and pregnant female zebra danio
Overall Zebra danio only grows up to 2 inches in length (with the female slightly larger) and they are an active surface swimmer which spends most of their time on the upper region of the fish tank. The fish is non-aggressive and is basically a community species that can get along with other tropical tank mates. If you are an avid hobbyist looking to setup the perfect community tank comprising different species of community fish, then zebra danio should be among those in your list. Since the fish occupies the top area of the tank region, I would recommend you consider getting the small sized otocinclus catfish which stays on the bottom, while for the middle dwellers, it can be a selection of either neon fish or the other tetra species.

Maintaining the strong coloration of these pet fish requires a brightly illuminated fish tank using fluorescent type aquarium lighting that will turn on and off by itself replicating the natural outdoor condition. Apart from that, in order to ensure that the fish stays healthy you should do your best to provide variety of foods to enrich their diet. Zebra danio is not picky when it comes to feeding period as they will readily accept microworms, live daphnia, fish powdered flakes and mosquito larva. It is also a good idea to maintain a soft water condition with hardness level in the region of 3.5 to 6.7dGH and if possible ensure that you have a good filtration system to get a crystal clear water condition.

Just like any other Amazon fish that demands a surrounding tank environment full of vegetation, the zebra pet fish is no exception as well. It is important that you also have a variety of big and small leaves aquarium plants to makeup the area and fill the gap so that the fish can rest and hide when it feels threatened. In fact, this kind of tank condition is also needed if you intend to breed and continue to collect the offspring. Apart from that, this will also ensure that the aquarium water is rich with oxygen to maintain a healthy and active fish companion.

Golden and Dwarf Pencilfish Profile

tiny golden pencilfishPencilfish is a tiny and peaceful community fish characterized by its thin body which is made up of three different color stripes. There are quite a number of different species that form the pencilfish family group of fish and each has its own different appearances depending on the location on which they were caught. Based on my own investigation and casual conversation with pet shop owners, some of them claim that certain species actually originated from the rivers of Amazon while some were caught and imported from the French Guyana. However, presence of these fish is very rare nowadays and I can hardly come across aquarium pet stores that openly offer the fish for sale.

Two of the most popular species is the golden pencilfish (Nannostomus beckfordi) and dwarf pencilfish (Nannostomus marginatus). Generally they are rather shy and would sometimes become motionless, swimming at the same spot. The tank that houses the fish should be a well-planted aquarium with at least 50 percent of overall area covered with dense vegetation to provide a good hiding spot. I even took the effort to add some small empty clay pots so that the fish feels more like at home for them. Pencilfish prefer to move in groups and if possible get at least 7 -8 of them or you can even consider adding neon fish, zebra danio, hatchet or killifish as they all make perfect tank companion.

Feeding the pencilfish can be quite a challenging task because your main concern is that since their mouth size is so small, there are only certain types of food that can fit into it. For my pets, I usually offer them occasional feed of brine shrimps and I add the finely crushed food flakes that are specially made for tiny fish. Sometimes I even took the effort to introduce a variety of foods to enrich their diet such as growing live daphnia or collect these from ponds coupled together with mosquito larva if I happen to bump across these as well. What I notice is that my pencilfish simply love these until I find myself unable to find constant food supply to feed them. Nevertheless, spending my time in search for their favorite food is always something worth the effort.

Breeding the pencilfish can be quite tough to achieve because basically what you will need to do is to construct a proper egg collection mechanism to prevent their own parents from gobbling up and make a good meal out of their own eggs. What I did was to purchase a type of fine wire mesh and put the layer on top of the aquarium surface so that when the eggs are dropped to the bottom, the parents won’t be able to reach them. Identifying which of the pencilfish is a male or female is a close to impossible feat to achieve as they all look almost the same. I could only tell the different gender apart based on their activity when the males start to chase after the females. Once the eggs hatched, it will take about 5 to 6 days before the fry become free swimming in search of food.

About Me

My Photo

My fascination and interest towards aquarium fish has led me to devote my time towards caring and learning about this wonderful pet.

Aquarium fish keeping is a very challenging and exciting hobby. When I first started, I never knew much or have the necessary guidance back then because none of my family members were actually a keen hobbyist. And because of that, I’ve encountered numerous failures and the worst part is having to deal with dead fish every time when you started to grow fond and getting attached to my pets. However, I persevered and took steps to find out and search for information from other hobbyist, apart from the knowledge gained and learned from my own experience and research. The blog that I’ve created here is meant to share useful information and tips about aquarium fish keeping so that new hobbyist will not make the same mistakes that I’ve made in the past."
