Really Cool Pet Fish (Rainbow Shark)

cool pet fish rainbow sharkMy choice and idea of a really cool pet fish would be having a Rainbow Shark. The fish is considered among one of the most popular choice of community tank mates that can mix well with other freshwater species like clown loaches, gouramis and plecos. It should not be confused another home aquarium pet fish known as the red-tailed black shark (which is actually all black except only for the tail fin) although both names suggest resemblance to each other.

What makes rainbow shark considered cool is also due to the fact that they can be relatively easy to care for. Those who have experience looking after common freshwater pet fish will find that their requirements can be less demanding compared to some other species like discus. Physically rainbow shark can only grow up to 6 inches in length and that means aquarium size measuring about 30 gallon is usually sufficient to house a single fish. Avoid mixing two rainbow sharks together because although they will not attack other fish species, they can turn aggressive when there is more than one of the same kind.

There are actually two different variants of this popular fish sold in pet stores. One, which is rather common also known and identified by its scientific name, as Epalzeorhynchos frenatum is usually grayish or orange in color on the body while the fins are dark orange (As shown in the picture above). The other variant is completely white and is the albino type. The color combination of the fish definitely makes them look exciting when placed in a tank full of live aquarium plants.

Feeding the fish and watching them eat can also be fun and cool. With their mouths turning upside down complete with a set of barbels, it is actually meant to scavenge the aquarium sandy bottom beds looking for foods. In fact, they will eat just about anything, which can be found on the bed surface, such as leftover flakes, worms or even tiny shrimps. Because they are generally bottom dweller spending most of their time on the lower half of the tank, you can also mix them with other top dwellers to create a stunning community aquarium. Be careful however, to choose the right tank mates or else your rainbow shark will end up being the dominant species eating all the foods.

archer fishWant another idea of getting really cool and exciting pet fish? How about the archer fish? It's a brackish aquarium species. Look at how the way they hunt down for insects by shooting a jet of water to make it fall. Pretty neat eh? That's what I think. Guest post submitted by Simon Schmidt

Breeding Tropical Mbuna Cichlids Fish

breeding tropical cichlids fishEvery tropical Malawi Mbuna Cichlids Fish that you saw are maternal mouth brooders, in which by simple term means that the female is responsible for caring the young from eggs, larvae up to fry development. In addition to that, she also determines and find out the best male cichlids breeding partner. For the male, the only role that it plays is to make itself as attractive as possible in terms of colors display in order to impress the female cichlids fish so as to project itself as the right breeding partner.

During the breeding process, the male plays the dominant role in the courtship. Usually it will choose a piece of rock that will represent the territory as the spawning site. Most Popular Freshwater Pet Fish

While there are endless names of popular freshwater fish domesticated as pets in home aquarium, some remain the most commonly accepted such as the goldfish, discus, livebearers species such platy, guppy and swordtails including other aggressive types like the oscars and betta.

Most Popular Freshwater Pet Fish
Goldfish has always been the favorite and can be easily identified even by kids. With its round body and other various shapes with some interesting varieties having a nice trailing fin coupled with beautiful colors, no doubt they become the most popular choice for every freshwater fish enthusiast.

Discus at one time during the early year 2000 became a craze especially among hobbyist around Southeast Asia. They were appreciated for their delicate slow gentle movement and odd thin discus shape body which allow them to be easily recognizable and stand out from the rest. In fact, with their popularity, this has somehow lead to tremendously high demand and thus drives up the price for a healthy breeding pair, which could easily fetch a few thousand dollars.

Platy, guppy and swordtails will always be every kid favorite freshwater fish because they are cheap and can be easily kept in bowls. All these species are hardy types, which could tolerate poor water condition especially when the aquarium has yet to be fully cycled and they are also less susceptible to disease. Because of that, they are often bought and used as starter fish and until today, remain a popular choice among beginners to freshwater aquarium fish hobby.

Oscars are selected and became well-known because of their aggressive trait, which attracts the attention of fish hobbyist. In fact with their huge size and appetite and the way they approach their food, no wonder this has garnered a number of followers. The fish is also intelligent and could recognize the owner who feeds them. However, if you are a hobbyist who loves peaceful loving fishes that could get along well with each other forming a small aquarium pet community, then I would suggest you forget about having oscars.

Betta can be as exciting as the other freshwater pet fish. Although they are small and often stuffed in jars and hanging fish bowls, their ease of care has made them a favorite. They are also popular as fighting fish and those who like to see them engage in a duel will definitely find this species interesting.

About Me

My Photo

My fascination and interest towards aquarium fish has led me to devote my time towards caring and learning about this wonderful pet.

Aquarium fish keeping is a very challenging and exciting hobby. When I first started, I never knew much or have the necessary guidance back then because none of my family members were actually a keen hobbyist. And because of that, I’ve encountered numerous failures and the worst part is having to deal with dead fish every time when you started to grow fond and getting attached to my pets. However, I persevered and took steps to find out and search for information from other hobbyist, apart from the knowledge gained and learned from my own experience and research. The blog that I’ve created here is meant to share useful information and tips about aquarium fish keeping so that new hobbyist will not make the same mistakes that I’ve made in the past."
